Frequently Asked Questions
What is a complete horse feed?
Complete feeds are often referred to as feeds formulated to provide
all necessary nutrients (protein, fats and carbohydrates which
provide energy, vitamins and minerals) other than forage and water.
Most horses that consume complete feeds, drink adequate water
and receive adequate forage need few or no additional supplements.
Some complete horse feed are called specialty feeds. As the name
implies, specialty feeds are formulated especially for a certain
age of horse, or for horses that have specific health issues.
For example, complete feeds designed for older horses are made
to ensure easier digestibility. Because senior horses often suffer
from tooth loss and wearing away of the molars, they lose the
ability to effectively chew hay, and senior feeds make the process
easier. Also, complete feeds for older horses are usually higher
in energy, protein, vitamins and minerals to make up for the horses'
loss in digestive effeciency.
Complete feeds are also ideal for horses suffering from health
conditions such as heaves or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
which makes breathing difficult. Heaves can be caused by mold
and dust in hay, so horse owners are forced to limit hay consumption.
Hence, they need a feed that is low in starch or soluble carbohydrates
and higher fiber content to compensate for the limited forage,
while still providing adequate nutrients. Complete feeds designed
for these horses can remedy the problem.
